  • ACLU's Gold Chains Project
    Responsible for all levels of UX and Front-end design/development to build a responsive website featuring the hidden history of slavery in California; this project dovetails with the 1619 project and the 400th anniversary of the arrival of enslaved Africans in Virginia
    • Met with stakeholders regularly to iterate as we built, basing our revisions on user feedback
    • Developed the site based on data provided by a coalition of team members spearheading interviews, research, and content
  • Stanford d.school's Craft Circle
    Invited to join d.school's Craft Circle, a network of creative talent selected for their orientation toward human-centered design and methodologies.
    • Designed tools using human-centered design as part of the Healthy Polling Places Project (part of the Stanford-MIT Healthy Elections project). These tools were created to help election officials address health risks associated with in-person voting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials needed to be easily accessible for non-design/non-technical volunteers and staff. Methodology was extremely iterative, with quick turnaround on feedback and multiple people working together on materials.
    • Worked with the Oceans By Design team to develop Prototyping with 360/VR materials that could be easily repurposed to allow formal/informal educators to easily create and distribute their own instructions to help students develop their own prototypes
    • Redesigned an artifact for the Teaching & Learning team to allow staff to collect data using design-thinking principles such as user personas and scenarios
  • ACLU's #Powerthe14th Campaign
    Fabulous collaborative effort honoring the legacy of the 14th Amendment. Responsible for all areas of UX/UI, responsive design, infographics, social media, and QA/testing.
    • Led the design process to create a powerful collaborative website honoring the legacy of the 14th Amendment on its 150th anniversary
    • Met regularly with the Communications staff and stakeholders including Youth Radio, Underground, and LightBox Collaborative to review design solutions and iterate based on user feedback
    • Developed a visual language for the site and all supporting materials using UX tools and processes (including Style tiles, Metaphor generation, Gut reaction sorting)
  • The Women’s Building
    Created a dynamic brand for a high-energy campaign to win a $150,000 Partners in Preservation Main Street grant for the San Francisco Women's Building, to highlight and raise awareness for the often unrecognized contributions of women to American history and society.
    • Built a flexible and cohesive identity that could be used across multiple channels (web, social, print) that was easily adapted by staff (non-designers) as needed. The resulting brand was so well received that the client retained the new look and feel for additional projects beyond the initial campaign
  • Gobble.com
    Led all aspects of UX and Front-end Design for Gobble.com, including design and launch of the first-in-the-field meal prep product. This included developing prototypes, writing semantic HTML/SCSS/CSS, conducting research and testing, and iterative product development.
    • Worked cross-functionally with Marketing, Engineering, Customer Service, and Data Scientists to develop new features and eliminate customer pain points within Registration and Cart flows
    • Created online design standards and updated legacy HTML and SCSS to maintain more consistent brand standards
    • Managed Agile workflow by maintaining UX and Marketing boards on Asana, and coordinating with Marketing and Engineering for Sprints
    • Met with the VP of Marketing weekly to continuously integrate Customer Service feedback and Analytics to keep priorities focused on the User Experience
  • The California State Labor Commissioner's Office and the UCLA Labor Center
    Designed popular education materials for workers' rights in partnership with California State Labor Commissioner's Office and the UCLA Labor Center to support the Labor Commissioner's campaign to reach as broad an audience as possible while raising awareness of worker's rights. We designed six large format brochures and a worker calendar, each translated into as many as six languages.

  • The California State Labor Commissioner's Office (DLSE)
    A Report on the State of the DLSE was an ambitious project highlighting the incredible work accomplished by the State Labor Commissioner Julie Su and the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement. This project required the distillation of vast datasets into a succinct and coherent design.
    • Designed a report to highlight the broad and effective changes made to the DLSE by the State Labor Commissioner, Julie Su
    • Responsible for all areas of Graphic Design, Project Management, Art Direction, Data Analysis, Information Architecture, and Infographic Design
  • Cal Alumni Association of UC Berkeley
    CAA's site was revamped to have a common look/feel across three distinct departments, while featuring custom branding for the California Magazine and the Lair.
    • Redesigned the CAA site to retain the main brand look/feel, while creating three cohesive but distinct brands, complete with individual color palettes, fonts, and site structure
    • Interfaced with Engineering team to build a custom Drupal back-end
    • Led stakeholder meetings using Style tiles, Metaphor activities, and User interviews

  • Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco (FRBSF)
    Provided UX and Front-end design for the public facing websites for the FRBSF

    • New sections included: Unreserved and an Interactive Payment Diary Game
  • Oakland Starting Smart and Strong (OSSS)
    Developed branding and redesigned materials for OSSS, an early education collaborative to ensure that every Oakland child grows up healthy and engaged in learning

    Created promotional materials (including a billboard!) for Amnesty USA's first ever Shine a Light on Human Rights award presented to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. It was a particular honor to have the opportunity to work with the artwork of one of my heroes, Shepard Fairey.

  • Code for All Annual Report and Case Studies
    Created front-end design for the 2013 annual report for Code for All using HTML/SCSS and Bootstrap to create a responsive and visually rich site. Designed four case studies to highlight Code for All and their partners, developed flexible white paper type layout to present findings from each group (PDF files):

    Developed and designed the visual identity, signage, and other materials for the Code for America Summit 2017 and Code for America's Donor Brochure

  • Astraea Foundation's LGBTQ Racial Justice Fund
    Website design and build from the ground up for this exciting fund. This project took disparate sources of data, UX/UI research with a cross-section of funders and Astraea staff to build a modern, responsive site, with a highly customized Wordpress back- and front-end.
    • Provided Research, UX Design, Front-end Design/Development, and Project Management for a website design and build for a collaborative philanthropic initiative that recognizes groups working across issues and movements for social change
    • Built a responsive design with a custom functionality, theme, and WordPress back-end
  • Geography at UC Berkeley
    This project updated the existing website design to be responsive and work with modern browsers and devices, while also moving them into a custom Wordpress setup. We were responsible for all facets of the project from start to finish.

  • APALC (now Asian Americans Advancing Justice)
    This site involved a broad cross-section of voices and was one of the most successful design by committee projects I have ever worked on. The migration to Drupal was handled by Trestle Media. I was responsible for all stages of the project from exploratory/planning meetings with all levels of the APALC team, to project management and UX, to design and front-end development. (They have since rebranded as Advancing Justice, but kept the design we created.)

  • Organizing for Action (OFA)
    Volunteered as a Front-end designer, Graphic designer, and Illustrator for the Obama campaign's Tech Field Office. Designed, developed, and illustrated digital products and tools to support the 2012 Presidential Campaign. This included creating prototypes, writing semantic HTML/CSS, and tracking code changes in GitHub.

  • Recipient of 2nd Place Award at Change.org's first-ever Hack for Change contest.
    Provided UX Design, Graphic Design, and Strategy as part of a three-person team for AnonyMouse, an SMS/mobile/web app (Twilio) that connected LBGT youth with mentors that can safely and anonymously answer difficult questions.

#Pantslife...
After a solid 7 year run with Dogmo Studios, I got an offer I couldn't refuse and spent a year wearing pants and working at a sweet little edu-startup (see Little Passports on my résumé and samples of work for more info).

The #pantslife forecast for the second half of 2018 is unclear, but there's much afoot, including an inspiring collaboration with the good folks at the ACLU of Northern California on their #Powerthe14th Campaign.

Whirlwind!...Whadda ride!
The cobbler's children and all that, things took off and we've been busy with a variety of projects. We wanted to stop and at least thank you (yes, you!) for the fantastic and inspiring projects over the last few years. Here's to many more! (And, of course, let us know if we can be of any help!)

Using our powers...

It's the end of the world! (aka 2012):
Building on the momentum from 2011, we're growing Dogmo Studios into a bootstrap distributed agency. This gives us the ability to reach more clients and provide more comprehensive services--all while keeping things lean and agile. (Just the way we like!)

Jumping off the cliff:
Started 2011 by taking the plunge, and dedicating myself to a little startup venture of my own. Focused on extending skillsets in visual design, UX/UI, and mobile/web development.

UX/UI:
Spent 2010 on PCWorld | Macworld's design team as an Interactive Designer (Front-end coding in HTML/CSS, Wireframing and mockups in Photoshop/Illustrator, Interactive designs utilizing JQuery and Flash. Storyboarding, SVN/Eclipse, Agile Development Process).

Mobile venture:
Responsible for all aspects of design and illustration for Weetwoo! Kids Video iPhone app.

Random goodness:

Inordinately fond of bright/shiny and salty/spicy. At my Tol (돌) ceremony, I grabbed a pen and I haven't let go of it, both literally and metaphorically. (If anyone knows how to repair old fountain pens, lmk!)

2019 was an epic outrigger season...got to be on the ground floor of a new outrigger team and finally got to my bucket list race, Na Wahine O Ke Kai! Hard to hit pause after so much stoke, but appreciating the rest and looking forward to 2021!
